GREEN LINE TOURS – Booking Stazione Termini
Via Giovanni Amendola, 32 Roma
Spend unforgettable moments in the footsteps of the Etruscans, far from the chaos of the Eternal City, deep in the green hills of Lazio countryside. After an hour’s drive north of Rome, along the Via Cassia, you reach the lovely Ancient Town of Sutri, ancient Gate to Southern Etruria. Walking around the Necropolis, one of the best preserved examples of tombs of the Roman time, dating back to the 1st century B.C., through the 3rd century A.D.
Then you enter the amazing Amphitheatre, outstanding and unique, totally excavated in the tufa (local volcanic stone). Just a few more steps bring you into the Church of Madonna del Parto. Inside the church, originally built as a Mithraeum, is the beautiful ancient fresco representing Nativity.
Passing through Porta Furia (Furia Gate), you stroll through the medieval narrow streets and then reach the “sofa” Square. This houses the monumental fountain (18th century) and an Etruscan arch. A clock-tower was placed on the arch, overlooking the Town Hall, where some Roman epigraphs are kept.
After a dip into the Romanesque architecture at the Church of S. Silvestro, you reach one of the most evocative spots with a wonderful view, the Old Wash Tub. There you will enjoy a delicious lunch with food & wine tasting.
